I’d never heard the Magic Stick story before now, but I’d guess it’s a very old folktale along the lines of a man acquiring (possibly by naughty means) a spear said to always kill what the bearer wishes. In this case, the man wishes it to bring his hungry family meat. The wife becomes frightened, so the man tries to stop what is now a curse by locking the spear away but, to their horror, it kills their dog… and it could kill one of them. Accordingly, the spear is burned and the ashes scattered, rendering the magic inert. Think of it as a bloodier version of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice!
