  4. I was discussing that with a friend over the holidays. One big difference between the UK and other EU countries is that the UK never experienced defeat or occupation - and so escaped the hardest of the social lessons that these caused. Couple that with a press that doesn't inform as well as in other states, and you have a recipe for the UK really messing itself up. Millions of Brits really are ignorant poorly informed and - get this - demand to be taken as seriously as people who know about stuff. It's stupid, and it's a big problem. I think it may get much worse.

  11.  @minimax9452  Exactly - the EEC/EC/EU solved that problem and nobody wants war or ordinary people to face awful hardship. Some of us in the UK learned this. Some of us did not. Most Brits do not even see it this way, but to my mind, this is the biggest difference between the UK and countries close to it. Most of the south of England, in particular, is into English exceptionalism. Other parts of the country are usually saner. Ireland is of note. It was an unhappy place before WWI and lost a lot of men. It got nothing good from WWI itself other than the chance to escape, and the Irish - being basically decent people - view cooperation with their neighbours as a good thing. I seriously wish I could apply for another EU passport.
