Not really. Austerity was a rationale given for changing spending priorities. Did it work? Not really. Did Osborne fix the economy? Well, he didn't repair it. "but do it after we are out of debt" That'll be many decades in the future. We need to stop using debt as an excuse: states have debt, and the UK's is not that bad. The real danger is not debt, but the ratings that determine how cheap the debt is.
