@hairyhermit4801 I love it when some-one comments on something they obviously have little knowledge of.........the reason Greece got into such a mess was that people could retire on state pension as early as 52 years of age especially those that worked for government departments, & almost everyone was doing so, Greece had the highest number of retired people in all of Europe, it got to the stage where they were paying out more in retirement pensions than their income from GDP, even when this was pointed out to them, the Greek government ignored it for several years, then came the global recession in 2008, which severely crippled Greece even more since they were already struggling, the EU told them if they wanted help, they were going to have to look at their retirement policies, again they ignored it & managed to secure loans from Germany which had way over the top interest payments, they borrowed more untill in the end, they were only able to afford the interest payments, & that's how the Greek government got into the mess it has, if had taken the EUs advice & looked at increasing its retirement age to standardise with most of Europe it wouldn't be where it is now !
