  1. My wife is a prosecutor for the state in which we live in the USA. She freaks out every time I find and record a number station, like some government agency will be offended that I'm using my $40 shortwave pocket radio to bring down their empire. Explanations are useless.

  2.  @ThermoMan  It was illegal to listen to shortwave in the USA during WWII out of concern that Americans might be swayed by Axis propaganda. However, nobody turned in their pre-1942 consoles, many of which had shortwave bands. I've discussed this with radio mentors who lived through the war, most of whom listened to Lord Haw Haw and Axis Annie for laughs and nothing more.

  3. I live in the USA. As long as you don't actively seek to decrypt confidential communications through skullduggery, you're free to listen to whatever you wish. If someone is foolish enough to broadcast sensitive communications over an open channel, that's their problem, not yours.

  4. The right to listen is a foregone conclusion where I live in the USA... unless you're taking active steps to decrypt classified information. If you do that, you're a spy who needs to be detained.
