  10. 🤮 very bad take. The power imbalance in the region that heavily favours the Israeli government over the last 75 years has led to a far greater number of victims on the Palestinian side. But this does not mean there are no victims on the Israeli side. Failure to acknowledge this will only work against future peace, and your statement does more to ensure more Palestinian victims by working against peace, not less. I understand the desperation that led to this Hamas attack and how the Israeli government and extremist settlers etc actions caused the desperation, but this does not justify this recent massacre or remove the fact that the many civilians who bore the brunt of it. Just as this massacre doesn't justify what seems to be war crimes currently happening to the people in Gaza. Your comment sounds more similar to the words of Israeli government far right extremists than the words of someone who wants peace.

  15. They explained in this podcast that is not the case. The international law says extra precautions have to be taken in regards to schools and hospitals (which seems perfectly sane), and doesn't say no military action can be taken when schools and hospitals are used for military purposes (such as firing rockets,etc, which is against international law in its own right). Over simplifying really in dangers the issue to potentially ignore important truths. And this is being done by partisans on both sides of the debate which gives weight to the argument that a detailed international legal framework is needed to deal with such important issues. This then raises the counter that international politics undermines, muddies this framework as major countries act in their own self interest and not in the spirit of the international law (the 5 members of the security council get to nominate a judge each and it has been said the US,UK will side with Israel and China and Russia will not want a genocide judgement because they have their own potential genocide cases to worry about). Personally in the short term I hope for the hostages to be returned to their families and the suffering and death of Gazans as a result of this war to stop. Longer term I hope for all people in Israel and Palestine to have basic human rights and live in relative peace (which seems impossibly far away at the moment)

  20. I listened to the whole story and understand your critique of the narrator but feel it's such a minor point that I didn't even think about it till reading your comment. Of course everyone is different and your point about being used to subjectively higher quality narration makes sense. I was impacted much more by the clash of modern true crime, respect for victims innocent surviving families vs societies need for justice at any cost. Listening to the end really drove this point home.

  22. From what I've seen, there has been almost silence from leaders of countries who have citizens in Gaza in regards to talking about getting them out. Why isn't there a loud chorus calling for the crossing with Egypt being opened to let people out and let the humanitarian aid in? It's criminal.

  24. Misinterpreted, the conversation specifically made the point that Russia and China had very different approaches in Africa. Where Russia has got a foothold in Africa there have been many instances of mercenaries committing heinous crimes on civilians. Russia through Wagner has had a much more of a r*pe and pillage approach rather than a "fair business" approach. China has been different, but what Chinese companies have done in central Africa would be delusional to call it fair once aware of the facts, the Chinese dept trap is a real thing. The west has definitely not been angels, but in Niger if Russia repeats what it's done in Mali & Burkina Faso, the general population will suffer greatly. After an increase in stability under a democratic government over the last year or so, yesterday's report of a second terrorist attack which killed ~ 17 Niger soldiers is a bad sign of what's to come. As they said in this report, Niger's neighbours had coup's, Wagner were invited in, terrorism attacks and killings increased.

  25.  @petergreenwood7731  Reality tells a different story, countries that have let Russia in have had worsening situations. Corrupt local individuals get rich while the general population suffers. Also while China brings in major funding, it is in the form of exorbitant loans that leaves the local countries in Dept traps. Both countries main interest is in stripping resources wealth without any real concern for human rights and democracy (what's beneficial to the general population). Russia & China's growing influence in Africa is leading to greater suffering for local populations.

  32. I appreciated this coverage of sleepy Don, made it a lot more relatable than the headlines I had come across. Hours of legal jargon would be boring as f*ck and most people have been super tired at inconvenient times. Even full blown narcissists occasionally show cracks in their public persona revealing their vulnerabilities, even an assh*le can be nice sometimes. Also enjoyed the episode more for the insights into the legal jury system.

  33. 33:52 Libraries Rock! Didn't get as much from libraries in childhood as I could've if I had tried harder to build on the exposure my mother and grandfather gave me. During a time of hardship in my twenties I rediscovered the brilliance of the library institution and up untill recently I used my local regularly. Thanks for the reminder to pay my local library a visit ( they are also providing more and more virtual services, they are not solely about words written on paper!)

  39. I was glad they mentioned it near the beginning. I had seen barely any reporting of it except for local news and Al Jazeera but I have since seen more national/international reporting, eg the BBC had a local San Diego reporter cover it well even though the BBC host seemed to be trying to gloss over it. I would like to see more details reported about who was among the counter protestors. There is clear footage of known neonazi agitators at the protest, such as Narek Palyan who has been involved in numerous violent counter protests against the LGBTQ community and has been open about his antisemitic views but seems to be accepted by at least some in the pro Israel protest camp (this hypocrisy alone makes it news worthy).

  40. 38:07 the fact that this interview was probably being done as the Lebanon front of the current war was drastically heating up or soon after must be extra stressful. There seems to be a shortage of Lebanese and/or Lebanese American voices giving their perspective on American MSM. Isn't there a large expat Lebanese community in the United States? Even larger than expat Palestinians? Here in Australia we have a pretty significant Lebanese community, especially in Sydney our largest city (no disrespect Melbourne but the stats don't lie😉). And we had coverage of people fleeing arriving on chartered planes, people in Beirut, local community leaders, local expats and 2nd generation locals, all having their voices widely covered. Of course this may shrink as the news cycle clicks over, and there are significant flaws that can be seen and need to be addressed in our MSM down here, but the worst failings of American MSM I really hope we find a way to avoid.

  42. Have heard many different discussions about this first debate and still took away valid viewpoints I hadn't heard elsewhere, despite the "childish giggling" (heard of satire haters? The little bit of comedy makes politics far more digestible and modern politics is constantly providing amusement without any help from outside, so to ignore it is avoiding reality). Agree with the ladies, Vivek is horrible, he is the candidate for the young blue checkmark Elon stan bigots and will only help to push more women away from the Republican party. Older Republicans are definitely not ready to vote for a president with a strange name which is an abhorrent principle, but will serve to help save the rest of the world from the nightmare that a Ramaswamy presidency would be.

Democracy is a bane to the far right, shown by their repeated pandering to dictators and continuous attempts to erode democratic institutions whenever they get the chance. This is why the decline in trust of these institutions is so dangerous and the work to maintain, rebuild trust in, strengthen and modernise democratic institutions is so important. To paraphrase the famous quote: in comparing types of government, democracy is messy and flawed but the alternatives are much worse. What will happen if we don't put in the work to reverse the widening wealth gap as well as start to fix other social problems caused by globalisation, greed is good madness, big money corrupting the political system, etc, etc? What is likely to happen is democratic institutions will continue to weaken, leaving the door open for more far right strong men and authoritarian regimes to take power behind a fake pretext of "freedom" and appeal to nostalgia of an unachievable "better" past that never really existed in the way they portray it (especially for those who weren't the privileged few who benefited the most). Once power is guaranteed, freedom becomes a very subjective term, more based on support/agreement for the far right leaders, those disagreeing will usually lose their freedoms. Nothing good comes easy, we need to put in the work to keep and improve our modern democracies, because if we don't, the grifters, the corrupted power hungry, the nefarious, etc, will fill the gap.

  44. Am 🇭🇲, all true, but relatively recent. Grassroots women's football needs a lot more structural funding. With our success while hosting this world cup there has been a groundswell of calling this out, hopefully the work continues to grow after the cup is over. Painful loss for us last night but making the final four for the first time (men's or women's teams) is a great achievement and the players have done 🇭🇲 proud. Fair play to England, they were the better team on the night.

But it is the modern media and its environment that bears a lot of responsibility for this happening. So we've all been sucked into being idiotic with our media consumption, from a tiny bit through to a lot.

He said only one of the 2 officers who saw Crooks acting suspiciously left the building to go look for Crooks, the other moved around the building to try to spot Crooks from another window. And also the original window where they spotted a suspicious Crooks on the ground, didn't have a view of where Crooks shot from, on the roof in question. All this info was from a CNN article if interested.

My view was negative( the porno work only because of the damage to arab women, culture etc, from the most controversial film, any other films that didn't involve cultural/religious clothing I had no issue with). Of course replacing Biden via votes in a primary would've been better, but that wasn't given as an option and we are all now aware that Biden is too old to serve another four years (Trump's too old as well in my opinion, on top of being a bat-shit crazy liar).   73. According to Gazan health ministry the deaths in Gaza have roughly halved since the peak of 300+ /day to most recently being roughly 150/day on average. This is still TOO MANY and the article details this viewpoint if read and not just reacting to the headline. Your comment is very misleading and unhelpful. My personal view is all the hostages should go home to their families, the death and suffering of Gazans needs to stop through a ceasefire and true negotiations to find a path forward should be prioritised immediately.

Also have heard individuals(including members of Hamas) can be found guilty of crimes against humanity under international law and this process has already been started in response to October 7th. Not sure what you meant, as well as in terms of the current situation in Gaza. Hamas may have less legal protections under international law as terrorists, but this doesn't negate any of the legal protections civilians have. Want to be clear, I am not saying Israel has ignored all legal protections for civilians, the IDF has a long history of clear attempts to comply with international law. The intensity of the current conflict is unprecedented, increasing the likelihood of unprecedented outcomes.

His statements about Hamas treatment of Hamas prisoners(especially suspected spies) are backed up by Sinwar's(Hamas leader in Gaza) own admission of torturing suspected traitors. There is a decent Vice video from 2011 or 2012 where they do a tour of Gaza and gives good insight into parts of Hamas and some of life under Hamas. Agree 💯 that hearing from one side is a mistake and it is very important to have an open, sceptical mind. Best of luck sorting through the fact and fiction that surrounds us these days!

Doesn't see either party as ideal, "the lesser of two evils", but does see the Republican party being taken over by isolationists and reactionaries and not advocating the policies of "his party", the old school Republicans. Brushing him off for supposedly being "emotional" is a pathetic cop out and factually incorrect, and if Trump continues to insult and push away old school Republican voters, it's going to negatively impact him in the general election.

Legit debate on validity etc can be had but not recognising the difference between opinion reporting and objective reporting is an example of the really important present day problem that is information illiteracy. If still confused, here's a definition "Objective reporting is meant to portray issues and events in a neutral and unbiased manner, regardless of the writer's OPINION or personal beliefs". "Opinion journalism is journalism that makes no claim of objectivity, it features a subjective viewpoint, usually with some social or political purpose". Both are forms of journalism that have been around forever.

But the universe can be a wild, chaotic place occasionally and sometimes people hit the jackpot with a longshot. Trump) have worked to weaken safeguards, and Trump's immunity argument is the latest attempt to weaken democratic safeguards. Safeguards on democracy work until they are weakened enough to fail. Definitely hope there are safeguards that have procedures for your second point, "he would immediately be stripped of his office until a proper hearing", but hope they are more than impeachment by congress which has proven to be wholly inadequate.

Also googled your statistics claim word for word and the top result said the opposite : "Examining violent crime, homicide, rape, robbery, and assault for 1,997 counties in the United States, the findings indicate that increased prevalence of firearms was associated with increased violent crime, homicide, rape, robbery, and assault." This story is an example of why some people should not have access to guns, not only for the safety of those around him but also for their safety. If his access to guns was restricted, he may have not ended his life and may have got the help he so desperately needed. Serious Mental health issues and guns are a deadly mix.
