Edward Longshanks came up with Hitler's entire program for persecuting Jews; from political vilification through to destruction of businesses and mass killing of families even down to the detail of forcing them to identify by wearing a patch in the shape of a star. Therefore there is definitely a sense in which it is valuable to judge historical actions through more modern moral lenses - otherwise we will fail to recognise and learn the lessons.
