You've been tricked. The same transformer networks used for GPT now were invented and doing well at imagine recognition _at the time he was talking_! He was pumped up for the cold war, he cannot be regarded as even a good physicist without having drunk the propaganda about his career (the same propaganda which turned physics into the R&D department of a cold war machine).

@JITCompilation You are correct. In fact, this talk shows he was well behind and clearly ill-informed about the state of the art in image recognition.

@mgmchenry he was a confidence artist. Got a whole bunch of mathematicians to decide it's a good idea to proceed by integrating a divergent series. anyone else suggesting what he did would've been laughed out of academia. But not Feynmann, he was chosen as hero and the propaganda machine was going to make that true by hook or by crook.

Hang on. This was in the mid 80s when transformer networks were already shown to be effective for image recognition! His thoughts didn't even age well the day he spoke them.
