I think a big part of the problem is that I remember a point in time where there was a huge focus on "being born gay, can't change it" as if that was a) either definitively true or b) even remotely relevant at all. The challenge of born or made gay never should've been a battle ground in the first place, it's that line of argument which murkied the waters with "what about pedophiles" as a slippery slope argument being mixed in with "gays are like pedophiles" claim. A situation between two adults doesn't need legislative/social intervention (unless it's toxic and someone's at serious risk of course), but a pedophile situation does. That's why gays' do not need therapy for being gay, but paedophiles absolutely do need therapy for that. And the NEED for therapy in that situation I think is the key differentiator for why it can't be normalised. But, if you've spent your time talking about gay rights by arguing either side on the basis of born vs made, then the claims of these pedophiles do necessitate a climb down and backtrack for those people.
