  4. The unscrupulous dealer probably sprayed oil on the strut. Toyota struts are barely broken in at that mileage and will outlast the body of the car.

  5. The newest RAV4 is now legit midsize, the same size as the 1st Gen Highlander. The 6th Gen will be the same size as the 2nd Gen Highlander.

  6. New engines, even well made ones will produce a lot of medal during break in. Since the rings aren’t fully seated you will also get a lot of gasoline and carbon in the oil as well. This is why you dump the oil at 3-4K miles for the first oil change. Many do it after 500 miles.

  7. I love my 2019 RAV4 with the 2.5 gas engine, especially the 40+ mpg it gets.

  8. You don’t need to use premium gas and you don’t need to fix everything that breaks. It’s smarter just to drive em the way they are. I’d replace the air suspension with old steel suspension.

  10. I agree it’s not worth the effort to fix. That is a very minor oil leak. All engines leak a little oil especially if they get overfilled and/or run hard.

  11.  @KevinLin145  None, I did disable the notifications so start/stop unavailable is not displayed. The extra gas burned is negligible. I don’t want to be replacing the starter or the battery more than once. The cost of 1 starter replacement and 1 additional battery replacement will be an order of magnitude more expensive than a little gas. It’s also a safety issue. Emissions is worse with the starting and stopping.

  13.  @rightlanehog3151  The F150 is having all kinds of issues. The Raptor breaks tie rods if you take it off road. I’d trust the Silverado I4 Turbo over any F150.

  14. Believe it or not most people get rid of cars because they are tired of them not because of problems. With OBD II it’s now much harder to cover up issues.

  16.  @boogitybear2283  I’d say that modern cars are actually better. Toyota has fixed issues and made their cars even better. All manufacturers are trying to improve their product, but it’s difficult to improve something that is already very good. I avoid the first month after a new product launch.

  24. My early 19 RAV4 LE AWD has had zero recalls and has been nothing but perfection at 45k miles. Cars tend to have problems when very new, so I am out of that phase. This is the best RAV4 by far. 0w16 oil is very robust. Use it. My engine isn’t all that loud unless it’s run hard, but I think it sounds good.

  26. They are still using the 4.0 in many vehicles overseas and the 4Runner. It is powerful, reliable, and fuel efficient. It’s still a very modern engine. That being said the 2.4t is a better engine that has a good track record.

  27. This doesn’t surprise me at all. Cars, especially Toyotas, are built better than ever with respect to longevity. Most problems are from buggy infotainment software and owner abuse. My 19 RAV4 has 71k miles and I drive more than normal. Someone liked to drive a lot, probably drove for work.

  30.  @MC-mh2ju  I feel bad for the owner of this Avalon. This car is ratted out mechanically and aesthetically. It should have been parted out. If you fixed every issue it would cost more than $12k. For $25k you can buy a lower mileage car that’s been taken car of. Someone drove it hard over potholed roads and did minimal maintenance.

  31.  @michaels7499  I agree. Using slightly heavier oils is definitely a good way to protect engines especially when they get more miles on them. 0w16 is all about fuel economy, but is not the best to protect from wear especially when the engine is under extreme stress in a hot climate.

  32. I wish they put the Highlander Hybrid system in the Tundra. I don’t care if it’s slow. They can put lower gearing in it for towing. In the 80s people towed travel trailers with 180 HP V8s and thought nothing of it.

  33. The Dynamic Force 2.5 engine is amazing. They need a slightly larger 2.7 for the Highlander as a base engine.

  34. True, but this is an old design. Newer engines seem to keep getting better, some old timers may disagree. A new car now probably will get junked before the head gasket goes.

  35.  @DBMD7  Modern cars, especially Toyotas, are designed more like airplanes thus will last a very long time. In the 1970s cars had a hard time lasting over 75k miles. Now they go over 300k miles with ease.

  44. They are supposed to fill just below the full line. It would save them money. Overfilling is really bad since the oil will foam.

  45.  @nicholaspaul2458  Part of the problem is people complain if their oil is below the full line. I’ve always driven the car for at least half an hour and then waited 15 minutes to check the level. This gives a more accurate reading.
