Definitely. He tells it like it is. I don’t trust dealers. Many people should be changing oil more often and doing it themselves or by a private mechanic.

@michaels7499 I agree. Using slightly heavier oils is definitely a good way to protect engines especially when they get more miles on them. 0w16 is all about fuel economy, but is not the best to protect from wear especially when the engine is under extreme stress in a hot climate.

@michaelscottland4239 The problem is drivers keep getting worse. There is a very high chance one or both of your vehicles will get totaled in a crash long before they wear out with normal maintenance. Most Toyotas survive 10k mile synthetic oil changes just fine.

It’s good to decrease the interval as the car ages.

@rutgershouses You can still wreck an engine with 5k synthetic oil changes if you drive like a manic and use a poor fitting air filter.

@bluegrassman3040 Most Toyotas and others do just fine with 10-12k mile synthetic oil changes, as long as the frequency is increased as the car gets older. There is more to this story. I wouldn’t be surprised if the dealers used conventional 5w20. Who knows if they changed the oil filter. Who knows if they forgot to change the air filter. I don’t trust the dealer lube techs at most new car dealers. In addition a lot people drive their cars like they are in a race. You definitely do not want to do 10k oil changes on an engine with over 150k miles. If it’s not burning much oil you can probably stick with 0w20 synthetic, but consider going with 0w30 synthetic if consumption starts going up. I’d probably reduce the interval down to 3k miles once you get over 300k miles.

An improperly installed air filter or a defective air filter will prematurely wear out the engine. I wonder if it was part of the cause. 180k is a lot of miles on any engine especially if it was run hard by one of the many manic drivers.

This is why I DIY.

They are an order of magnitude more complex with repair costs much higher. It’s like going from the frying pan into the fire.
