The Car Care Nut

Newer cars are actually more durable (mechanically and crashworthiness). The $7k may just be the tip of the iceberg with that old car. One accident and your money is gone and you will probably get seriously injured. The insurance company will send a check for $1500.

I bet they missed a bunch of oil changes, beat on the car, used cheap oil, drove hard in the city, etc. This car is in overall poor condition. It may even have a clocked odometer. I wouldn’t put a penny into it.

@igortokarev2350 Most older cars had garbage engines and a few new cars still do.

@bluegrassman3040 Why would you spend $5k plus on a car worth $500-$1500? People wonder why they have no money. Those old Camrys were sludge monsters. I’m surprised the engine lasted over 100k miles. Cars from that era are deathtraps. Considering all of the SUVs and Pickups on todays roads a 20 year old sedan is not a place you want to be.

@bluegrassman3040 There are many factors that cause oil to deteriorate. The 2000 era Camry needed 2500 mile oil changes with Group 4 synthetic to prevent sludge especially in hot climates. The engines that last 200k plus miles from that era were pampered in a moderate climate with mostly highway miles. Newer engines take a lot more abuse. The oils are much better, especially 0W16. It’s an amazing oil.

@wholeNwon Your Grandparents paid $200k plus (in todays dollars) for their tiny lead and asbestos laden shack with bad windows and no insulation.

That is normal oil consumption for an older car. 1qt per 3000-5000 miles is nothing to worry about. I’d just keep using whatever oil you’ve been using and change the oil every 4K miles or 4 months tops.
