All engines burn oil. Toyotas burn very little in my experience. I’d bet the main problem is poor air filters, poor oil filters, and conventional oil. My RAV4 oil is full and clean after 10k miles, but I use group 4 synthetic. Most of my 10k miles was at high speeds on the interstate.

Sounds like you got a bad engine or not enough oil was put in.

I guess, but we had a 2010 Highlander 2.7 I4 in the family that had 10-15k oil changes. It didn’t burn a drop of oil at 120k when sold. The trick is to avoid short trips. Long highway trips with high speed driving are easier on the oil and engine. The manual called for 5k mile oil changes with conventional 5w20. We used synthetic. We never touched anything else besides the wipers, tires, and air filters. The oil always came out very clean.

All modern engines have lower tension rings. The rings have improved since the time they first came out.
