  1. Tesla is a tech company not a car company. That was their first and greatest mistake. They should have stuck with manufacturing electric motors and electronics. Not only is that their specialty but it also has larger profit margins which for a small company such as Tesla is ideal for growth. Compare the profit margins of most car companies to the profit margins of tech companies like Microsoft, Amazon etc.Moral of the story, Elon bit off more than he could chew. Don't interpret this as an insult to Elon Musk, the man is my hero. But his ambitions are not always realistic, like colonizing Mars.
