He knew this when he advertised : "be there. It will be wild". This wasn't a protest. You don't protest something that does not exist. It was an attempt to reverse the outcome of an election.

Pence didn't want to go down in history as another Benedict Arnold so he refused. You have to ask yourself why Trump had all those people invading the capital while they were tabulating electoral votes. It wasn't a protest. Trump knew he had lost the election. Mark Meadows will testify to that at the trial.
