  3. I can understand wanting to be free of T1 diabetes, but the question is really "what's the trade-off?" What horrible condition might result from the edit? The problem is that WE DON'T KNOW the downstream effects and these edits would be passed on to future generations of humanity, so it wouldn't affect only you. What if the edit predisposed you and all you're future offspring (and their offspring and their offspring and their offspring, etc.) to getting Alzheimer's at 30? Or Parkinson's? Or something else awful? DNA should stand for Do Not Assume. As a friend of mine once stated, "better the devil you know than the devil you don't."

Remember, they used to think that non-coding DNA was "junk DNA"!
