The one thing worse than being a wage slave is being a government slave - chained to keeping your UBI because all other options to gain what’s needed for life has been eliminated or reduced. Knowing you can change jobs, even careers, gives you hope and you can keep other parts of your life stable. Changing governments means totally uprooting from where you are and starting over somewhere else.

Judgments and penalties for being named on a fraudulent paper should be done based on number of incidents. Anyone could have the misfortune of being part of a team where someone on it committed the fraud. Maybe that could have happened a couple of times in a career (assuming that you didn’t learn to be more watchful after the first incident), but if it keeps happening, there should be serious consequences on a sliding scale. Being part of TEN papers isn’t an accident and his Nobel prize should be taken from him and he should lose his positions; even prison time for fraud shouldn’t be off the table as a consequence. Strong consequences are needed to reduce the temptation for others.

That fails to take into account that many wealthy people work far more than 40 or even 50 hours per week, at least for the generation that is accumulating wealth and the next generation that is conserving the wealth. It’s only when you get to the third generation that was brought up in wealth that the high-leisure, squandering lifestyle takes hold.

Perhaps it isn’t that poverty leads to short-term thinking, but rather that short-term thinking leads to poverty. Have any studies been done to test this?

Much depends on how a person spends their leisure time. More social media or porn sites would be bad for mental health and relationships.

@kezia8027 Well, ONE of us o preconceived opinions, but it isn’t me. UBI isn’t the problem. Trying to justify it while ignoring the downside is. I’d like to know more about that downside because future generations will pay the price, just like they always do.

Jasper passed the scrutiny so maybe not so sad if others who are considering doing something unethical think twice for fear that they’ll be caught - even if many years down the line.

@victormgv I think the difference lies in whether you’re working for yourself to grow a small business or working for someone else, not the number of hours being worked.

Thanks! Now I’ll never misspell that word again.

Your integrity is appreciated! IMO you’re choosing an excellent new direction for your channel. I look forward to your future videos!

@Kitkat-986 I can imagine such things can happen, such as the need to escape an abusive spouse. Trying to access support programs when you’ve never had to before would be a major adjustment, and it seems like some programs are made to be “sticky.” Congrats on transitioning back.

Well, since he didn’t follow the scientific method, the “real scientist” is questionable IMO. He didn’t really “find” his findings, but manufactured them.

@justtiredthings One of us did, but it wasn’t me.

Penalties for fraud should be high enough to serve as a strong deterrent against risking their career for financial or reputational gain.

Only if you believe that she’s a moral person. Being a moral person is defined by behaving in a moral manner so her “research” was just an attempt to muddy the waters.

Yesterday I watched a video where Reddit doctors called out a photoshopped brain tumor in MRI images that were used to try to get a defendant out of her court case. The potential for fraud using AI will have massive impacts on society far beyond academia. Fortunately, it WAS called out and the case IS going to trial. As just an ordinary retiree who happens to love truth and integrity, I’m quite concerned!

Oh, man, really?!

Scientific misconduct becomes even worse when public health recommendations are based on industry-sponsored fraud.
1
@samsonsoturian6013 The reason the fraud gets revealed is because it’s traceable or the data manipulation is clear.
