  1. Putin seriously overestimated his hand and underestimated the resolve of Ukraine and the EU. He thought they’d roll over for him at the threat of gas supply disruptions and that it would be a quick war with Ukraine getting thrown under the bus for “peace.” But by this time, the pattern became clear that it wouldn’t end with Ukraine. With the incursion into Russia, Ukraine can now bargain for the return of Ukrainian oblasts that were previously seized. Russia gaining nothing territorially (and ruining their own demographics and economy) is the best deterrent against further aggression.
