The economic situation is much worse in China. Recent college grads in China are having a very difficult time finding jobs and the property sector which accounts for 25-30% of China's GDP is in disarray at best and could collapse. Plus the local governments who were getting much of their funding for "land use sales" have seen that evaporate and have turned to LGFVs and many are insolvent. Those are just a few of the economic woes facing China given as examples but there are others.

@douginorlando6260 That doesn't seem to be among the policies that the CCP is implementing to deal with this. The motivation would have to be very strong for these highly educated Nationals to opt for a return to China and give up their freedom. Perhaps "threat" would be more accurate if their loved ones are at risk.

That is what Mao wanted judging by all the Chinese he had slaughtered in the "cultural revolution" and the CCP followed his lead with all the Chinese babies that were aborted in the "one-child" policy. So more correctly, "That is what Uncle Xi wants."
