Excellent advice. I rode my bike for 2 years to my community college while living at home and working part time. Having a job while going to school is a reality check. I dropped out after 2 years to work full time, but when I finally did transfer for a degree, it was for a career that required one and at a time when job prospects in that field were strong. I knew exactly what I was getting myself into in a way no HS student possibly could.

@ Good point, but I think the peer pressure is the harder thing to resist. My "privilege" was having struggling immigrant parents who by necessity strengthened me against the need to do what others are doing (spared me following the crowd into drinking, drugs, and sex as well!). I also learned some basic financial skills by observing my parents budget and handle credit. Every time my dad got laid off, we'd have to "tighten our belts." Now I see a budget as a journey of self-discovery. You periodically assess what your priorities are and how those change over time as you learn from both mistakes and what truly satisfied you.
