A single person being able to afford to live alone has always been unusual. What you call “pad-share” was the norm for singles in college and those just starting their working lives. Or you could rent a room with a family and get “kitchen & laundry privileges.” Buying a home is harder because we finance more of it (20% down payment was normal) and are paying for bigger houses. A home in the 1000-1200 square foot range is VERY hard to come by these days but that was the normal size for a family home before the developers discovered they could make more money building bigger homes and started building McMansions.

Honestly, our garaged cars today are better sheltered than people were 100 years ago.
