Thank you, Mike. I'm a cis woman, straight woman who considers herself an ally.
I've noticed, ESPECIALLY with Ana a shift in her tone. Personally, I noticed it first when she changed her language to be more honest about what she actually thinks about homeless people. Now, she has not outright said any of this, but she's recently started to pivot her talking points about the homeless in LA. Before, she only talked about it in a good way where she talked about the homeless needing and deserving homes. However more and more over time, she's clearly dogwhistled about her ACTUAL thoughts - kind of that she wouldn't care abiut homeless people as long as they were out of sight and out of mind, as if they're dirty, less worthy etc. I noticed that before the trans issues due to me having been homeless MANY times over LONG periods in my life, so obvs, I'll notice bad language on that issue sooner than I'll notice it on say trans issues (don't get me wrong, I notice it and have noticed it on trans issues as well, but since homelessness have had a SEVERE inpact on me, unlike trans issues, I'll obvs notice anti humane language regarding the homeless immidiatly). Since then, I've liked Ana less and less. She's talked about homelessness in LA as if it's only an issue that she cares about because it's an "eyesore" in her eyes, along with her saying she's scared of the homeless against her regarding crime, as if the homeless are more prone to violent crime than anyone else. To put a lid on this topic for now, it's clear to me that she wouldn't really care if thw homeless were completely out of her sight, like a total NIMBY.
THEN I started to notice her shifting her tone when it comes to especially trans people when it comes to LGBTQ+ issues. I can understand her when it comes to not wanting to be referred to as a "birthing person" etc., but that's in daily life. However, when it comes to medicine and biology and legislation, inclusive language IS NEEDED. Because some men have ovaries, and some women don't, and not every person with overies are birthing people due to fertility issues or sheer choice. So, as a woman with ovaries, I do not mind being referred to as a menstruating person when it comes to like I said legislation, biology and medicine. Just like Ana, I am biologically a woman who have the parts and ability to get pregnant and give birth, BUT I do NOT want to become either pregnant, nor give birth. I understand her there. She just doesn't seem able to compartmentalize when inclusive language such as "birthing people", "people who menstruate", people who can become pregnant" etc., because that language is simply inclusive and correct. Sure, you generally in day to day conversations want to be referred to by your intimate parts or ability to get pregnant or not, then I'm simply a woman - just like trans woman are. Unlike her, I understand the extreme importance in certain situations to refer to people in more medical ways, including in EDUCATION and LEGISLATION, so that people who fall out of the norm are equally included. It's not about taking away cis women's womanhood, it's just to simplify and narrow down the language to include and exclude the people it's about/not about. Using correct and inclusive language is not erasing anyone's identity. It's just that Ana seems a second away from becoming a terf, and also get offended by when necessary being called "cis". I haven't heard her say that yet of course, but that seems to be the next step for her if she goes further, if you know what I mean. Ana, with age, is becoming more and more like the people MLK warned about - the moderate, white woman. I don't remeber the exact quote, but you know which one. It's sad that she pivots that way.
However, I did watch Bennie's entire video, and found it to be a stretch to say that they've somehow become right wing. Although I did agree with his point OVERALL, I did honestly think she went overboard by even calling them right wing grifters. That's just not true. She made an overall good video explanation, and I understand that she personally felt the need to leave. I get it.
I could go on and on, but I think I've made my quite nuanced opinion clear. I am a TYT member and have been for soon two years, and although I don't agree with everything everybody says at all times, we do share the same core values. Disagreements are good, but we should also be able to agree to disagree. There are also so many other shows and hosts on TYT with differing stances and opinions on TYT. I've learned a whole lot and become more solid in my progressiveness thanks to TYT. I very much like and appreciate that Cenk employs progressives with differing opinions and are open to debate without the intent to "win" any debates, but rather have both the people debating and the listerners learn from each other. I know how hard it is to change your opinion when you feel like it's almost set in stone, but I appreciate them being OPEN to listen, disagree, learn from each other, get new perspectives etc.
I really don't like where and when only ONE opinion is allowed and "correct", that won't ever lead to anything fruitful. We can all fight towards the same goal, despite butting heads on the road to the goal. The goal is not to have everybody agree on everything, but for there to be an ACTUAL democracy, PEOPLE POWER, getting money tf out of politics etc., so that we're ALL equal with the same opportunities, so that the base is a socially functioning democracy where we don't anymore have to fight for even the most basic of rights, but rather can have fruitful debates and arguments from a level playing field. Democracy is not about us all thinking the same, it's about everyone being on the same level playing field regardless of your wealth, position or status. For everyone to be able to get the quality healthcare they need and deserve without going bankrupt or starve. For everyone to get the same quality education regardless of who you are and your background, for everyone to pay and benefit equally and equitable, the list goes on.
Lastly, I will continue to watch TYT and be a member. I will continue to watch other channels and perspectives, and I will continue to learn. I will continue to agree and disagree, and continue to keep an open mind. I will continue to fight for what's right, even if it doesn't personally affect me.
Thanks Mike for making this video. I was SO confused about what to think of it all, but you managed to help me help myself to not be so confused about what to think. I think for myself, but when there's so many views and perspectives, I often need someone able to, with nuance, explain the situation like a third party, but a third party with some insight. So thank you for your perspective. It helped me to find my own.
Btw, I'm not even from the US, nor have I ever been there, or even plan to ever visit. I'm born and raised in Norway and intend to live here for the rest of my life. However, the US being the "global superpower" it is, I think it's important to know what's going on over there, both to simply know what's happening there, but also because we're a global economy and global culture. What happens in the US affects other countries a lot, and the global community at large. The US tends to forget this, but the rest of the world doesn't, because we actually get affected by your decisions a whole lot. Also, your culture, policies and decisions spreads all throughout the world. Hell, the US should owe so many countries reparations for so many different things, but especially regarding war and climate change. But that's another conversation for another day..
Again, thanks Mike for giving your thoughts on this matter. It's been a total headscratcther for me. I've for SO LONG thought I was the only one noticing something.. different about Ana, since all the superchats that gets sent in ALWAYS agree with her, and praise her to the max, and the extremely rare time someone critizises her constructively via superchat, she refuses to listen and only takes it as an insult, instead of communicating better and being open to critique. Cenk is a whole lot better at taking in critisism, Ana simply refuses, because she's apparantly the "always right-queen", who deserves all the praise.. so I've felt gaslit to think that I'm overreacting on her behaviour, but I'm so thankful to know that I'm far from the only one who doesn't listen to her blindly. It's very good to know. So thanks.
