If it wasn`t for free/cheap health care in my country (Norway) I would`ve been dead many years ago, and I`m only 22. Same goes for the ambulance, of course. One time someone overdosed on heroin and pills in front of me and I was the only one there, he would`ve been dead if I couldn`t get ahold of the ambulance. Same goes for me.
Now some time later, after addiction, homelessness, rapes, getting robbed, beaten, I`m finally clean and on proper medication. I have a dog and a cat, a nice, big apartment, I`m able to work on my chronic pains with a professional and everything. I have been able to get some work experience, but due to Covid my work place got shut down. If it wasn`t for Covid I would`ve been working.
Yes, it`s the government that helps me put food on the table, a roof over my head etc., but at the same time I put money back into the system by simply living, practically. Every time I go to the grocery store money is put back into society. Every time I pay my rent and electricity, money goes back to society etc.
I`m not worthless just because I`ve fallen on my face many times. I`m glad my country doesn`t punish me for falling out of society`s norms while being underage, going on to my adult life. Things are hard of course, no one gets rich off of welfare to put it mildly, it is a constant struggle one way or another. That`s not to complain, it`s just how it is. I would never expect to recieve luxury on welfare. I`m happy to have what I have. Mostly, my life intact and not in constant danger anymore. Now, considerig I`ve gotten the oppurtunities I`ve gotten later on in life, I`m even more eager to be able to give something back myself. Whenever I have some money left, I`m always the first one to try to help out one way or another. I`ve given to charity and volunteered both during my homelessness and addictions, and after getting a home for myself and getting clean. Since I`ve met so many gracious people giving me a hand, many times without me even asking, it has inspired me to give at least as much back. Due to my life experiences, as rough as they`ve been, I`m more motivated than ever to give back and do something good for society.
You can judge society a whole lot by looking at how the society treats it`s poorest. I`m amongst the poorest myself, and I`ve had both great luck and fair oppurtunities wich I`ve seized, wich allows me to actually move on with my life and be not only a productive member of society, but most likely an even more decent, giving person than I would`ve ever been if I was given everything on a silver spoon.
It`s easy to judge people that are "below" you, but if we all started caring more about everyone, the world would be a much better place. If we don`t give everyone, regarldess of who they are, a fair shot in life, no one without priviliged resources would make it. That`s not fair. That`s like a monarchy without the titles.
