  1. Compare and Contrast: Oman. A state ruled by secular ruler who enforces religious law, where Islam and Ibadism specifically have remained extremely strong. Geopolitically, Oman is pretty non partisan, it sets itself up as a neutral place to have diplomatic meetings.

There's a massive difference between a religion being strict while just existing in a society, like Amish, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mennonites, to a religion having political power and using that to enforce itself, like these Shia, but also a Catholic theocracy or Communist states. How many people are still communist in Russia, China etc? Both might be called strict, but the effects are chalk and cheese.
