The council of Nicea was still a council. Some things everyone went in agreeing on, but the theology debate was a debate, with politics thrown in. That still seems way too democratic. Popes are elected, sometimes different papal candidates compete and campaign against each other. If they're a democracy, you look like an elective monarchy. For me, the unchanging Bible makes a more authoritarian leader. God has spoken, though Jesus, no one today has the authority to overrule that. If we're going for monarchy, and we should, it shouldn't be a human at the top.

If all society is just a bundle of cults, best pick the best cult. That's definitely Christianity, but the LDS understanding seems way too nationalistic for me. Nationalism seems like something in competition with Christianity.

@clearstonewindows Ah, that does clarify things, thank you. The idea of the constitution being divinely inspired I did not know about. It still seems more nationalistic than I'm comfortable with, but your take is more balanced than I was expecting.

I think that's true for a lot of tight knit, Hard, religions. Stalin is a great advertisement for Orthodoxy. I've heard the testimony of various apostates from various faiths, most of them are pretty positive toward the faith they left, though they totally won't intent that.

@skylinefever Those are the ones in talking about, they give a great testimony for their previous faith by how that He needed up after leaving it.

@clearstonewindows So you are a member of the LDS but not an American nationalist? If so, that's an intersection I have not heard of, I was under the impression it was taught that the US is a chosen nation, like Israel of old. Is that not something LDS teach?

Fascinating.
