The argument these two make is that it will cause such massive economic collapse and social instability in the U.S. and Europe that you will get civil war and other strife, and potentially the collapse of nations, so war between nations and spawning of terrorists. It won't be extinction, but it will be a China explosion type event, tens of millions of casualties, loss of tech advancement. However, it will reduce carbon emissions and other pollutants, unless a nuclear reactor or bomb goes off.
