Alawites are sort of Shia. Nowadays they have allied with Shi'ism, but in part that's just because Shia Iran supports Turkey. Assad himself is secular, a Baathist, Baathists being a political ideology defined by a mix of fascism and socialism that only really exist among Arabs. In the past Alawites have been the subject of study by western scholars, but they keep their religions beliefs secret, and may have intentionally lied to outsiders about what they believe so as to spread uncertainty. Maybe they really are Shia, but if so they don't make it that simple.

While I dont see much good in alchohol, it's definitely weird to me that the ground outside my local mousques is covered with ciggerettes. Surely tobacco is wirse than wine.

Frankly, I think the Ottomans were much more unpleasant because they were LESS islamic, not more. The Armenian, Asyyrian and wider genocides were carried out, first by Abdulhamid II and then by the Young Turks, right when western ideas of nationalism were speeading. The Muslim Jihadists and Catholic crusaders of the muddke ages carried out atrocities, but were quite able to rule over populations of different religion and ethnicities. When Islam and the medieval idea of monarchy declined in favour of western, secular concepts of nation and race, the ottomans began to see anyone who wasn't Turkish as a priblem to be violently solved, and they still don't admit to the crimes they committed.

Where are you getting that number? Does that include victims of the mongoloids and timuruds? If so, while Islam bears some guilt by association, most of the blame must fall on mongol culture. "Sword of islam" my foot, no one thought Timur was that except, maybe, himself.
