Given the Taliban has now begun cracking down on opium production, something the previous government could not or would not do, it may be much better for the West to have a functioning unfriendly government than a friendly one that doesn't deal with drug production. The Taliban were happy to sell opium when they were the insurgents but now theoretically oppose it, and can genuinely do so, if they want to.
