Fish eaters all around the world. Loving Faroe Island caugh fish, that is
3
Much, much, too small country and few inhabitants, railway would not get enough traffic to be profitable. Short distances, people like to drive to get all the way door to door in a short time. There are buses.
2
Faroe Island is formally connected to Denmark, but run as an independant country. That said, it is Norwegian companies that build subsea tunnels in Faroe island, as Norway have great knowledge of these kinds of projects
2
USD is the better known among an international audience
2
@MetaFootballTV Most got knowledge of USD and the relation to their local currency, so the knowledge is there
2
Out of practical reasons. Tunnel dividing in 2 directions, going to 2 different towns, at different side of a fjord
2
They want to be able to drive quickly from their homes to the main island. 400K pile of cash under their beds will not be to any help. It's money from sale of fish that will pay for all the new tunnels and roads, no subsidizing from anyone @jess_riedel
1
They murder salmon, sheep, chickens, moose and mouse. Stay. away.
1
No
1
Sell enough fish over the next 15 years to pay down loan for the tunnels. Which no problem. Lot's of fish
1
But is the roundabout place directly under the sea? Hardly not many of them, if any? Karmøy tunnel got one under sealevel, but located under mainland or large island
1
To earn more moeny than spent on the tunnel. It's just business. Saved transport time = saved money. Saved Money = earned money. Stupid.
1
Inlet/outlets are tens of meters above sea level. There are pumping stations at the bottom of the tunnels, in general, to handle water coming through the ground
1
How will it improve your life if some thiny island community far away you hardly know where is stop hunting a few hundred of the 100.000 whales surrending them and rather let them die and disapear into the ocean. Zero.
1
Millions of people around the world have fish several days aweek. Faroes Island supply fish to the world. Lot's of fish.
1
Yeah, $10 pass when having a annual subscription, which nearly most people will have
1
a railroad would been too expencive to operate with the low population, spread on different islands and small towns. There are quite many buses, but still that do not suit all people on a regular basis regarding where the buses travels and the time involved.
1
Fish buyers around the world are paying. Not Denmark or the EU. The big picture; less dead time sitting in cars, more time out fishing giving more export income. It all ads up, minutes and hours saved, every day, for decades to come
1
Issues with getting too steep grades. Longer total length, long curved tunnels in order to stay under a certain grade. Higher costs. If that island was supposed to have road connection in the frst place, it would been different.
1
They just don't care about fancy sports arenas, opera houses, they care first of all about getting quickly with car around the islands. Infrastructure is highly important, these tunnels ads value to the country in the long run
1
2 tunnels, more like 400 mill in total, not 500. 300 vehicles is for the southern tunnel to be finished in 2023. The tunnel with the roundabout is in operation, got 4500-5000 vehicles a day. 15 years down payment. Anyway, a big big investment for tat small country. But the government are quite frugal in general, no big fancy opera houses, sports stadiums and such, it's on infrastructure they but a most of their investment
1
The project is financed mostly by loans from different european banks, and a smaller amount from the Faroe Island government
1
The whole Earth and life going on there is a bait for a big metor to hit it, and everybody dies. But so far so good. Disasters happens now and then, but in between, enjoy life, day by day, not worry about disasters
1
The drivers using the tunnel system pays it down over a period of about 15 years. Saves much travel time for both private and companies, which is a big plus to the overall economy in the long run.
1
When it got a crossroad, another tunnel going from the main tunnel in another direction
1
@joneeikemo5260 Where?
1
In Faroe Islands the best and least expencive in the long run is underground tunnels.
1
@MetaFootballTV I would more say 'lazyness' ) Viewers in Europe have better have a relation to Euro and USD, knowing that are about equal, while other parts of the world more aware of USD as a foregin currency. I guess you might prefered British pounds being used, since the channel is UK based. He might think he don't want to bother' his international viewers by having them look up a currency calc ) I don't think it's a big deal. Those who are really interested in what the amounts will be in their currency will look it up quickly, while many will just take note 'oh it's a high amount of money' and do not think more about it
1
@MetaFootballTV Heaven knows what your point was. Lack of knowledge? There is no point in knowing all major currencies of the world by heart...one just look it up if needed. Why bother viewers looking up currencies when one just can use a curency they already know well. My conclusion is the channel can use whatever currency they want, without any questions asked. No problem.
1
not any bigger issue with earthquakes in Faroe Island. But I'm sure it has been incoperated well in all calcualtions, concrete walls and so on
1
Bulind the tunnels that save a lot of traveltime, like 50% in many cases, to both private trips, driving to work and for companies is an investment in the country's economic, not an cost.
1
Don't think thay have asked for your support in the first place? They manage fine by themselves
1
One get a loan and the users of the tunnels pay it back in 15 years. This is possible when the tunnels are seeing a lot of use and traffic, big time saving, lots of cizens and companies using it jointly pays it down. Other infrastructure projects can be cheaper to build, but on the other hand have issues getting enough traffic/income and having higher maintenance costs and so on
1
Rough nature conditions, deep waters, long stretches, high mainenence costs compared to tunnels. Tunnels in this location is to most profitable in the long run
1
The tunnel with the roundabout is about 140 mill usd, another one further south is 110 mill. These are the newest ones, built around 2020. 2 older undersea tunnels are built in the past. 500, or 700 mill as is mentioned in the video must be for all tunnels in the islands, many onshore included. But many of these tunnels have been built 20-40 years ago. anyway, lots of money for a small nation. Guess infrastructure is where they spend most of their money, and put less into fancy sports arenas, opera houses and such
1
Fish
1
apart from the country is gaining money cause of this new infrastructure system in the long run, you are correct. Time = money. Less travel time = more productive time = more money
1
Fish
1
Ever heard about 'banks'?
1
with the help of the 100.000.000 fishes) All forces pullying together makes wonders.
1
Buy paying down the loan for it over 15 years.
1
Not much ecosystem going on in the mountain under the seabed. Not worry about it. Now the cars have much shorte travel time, use less gas, and ferries not needed
1
Why does it need explanation? It's a round circle, concrete used, asphalt
1
Fish
1
Main islands are limited size. They want people to live on all the bigger islands and quickly go back and forth to work and shopping on the main islands
1
Tunnel splits, going to 2 towns, on each side of a fjord
1
One go there first of all because of the nature. some people just do not understand)
1
Not the best solution technically/economically in Faroe Island
1
It's in Norway the company got it's underwater expertice, it's norwegians that mainly are sent to these projects. Not a swede around. Sorry. @MrFelixify
1
Less dead time in a car = more time fishing, among else, = more $$$$$$
1
It's not 'spending', it's called 'investing in the country's economic development'. They make money on the tunnels and the high saving on traveling time for workers, companies and so on.
1
Fish sales
1
ask mommy to make a little roundabout on the bedroom floor, and drive matchbox car around it to illustrate and get your imagination kickstarted. Ususally works
1
Roundabout directly under the sea bottom
1
@TheRedBaronHP oh
1
Much too few people and small distances. One like to be transported directly 'door to door' in one go, both people and goods. Train would been not been a good economical solution here. Would not see enough use. There are buses.
1
Fish.
1
Hurt feelings bigly
1
They have planted a few small forrests, parks. Need to fence everything in, or the sheep eat it. Guess they do not bother too much
1
Some like to spend the money on beer and parties, others on tunnels. I say let them do whatever they like
1
Pensions funds can invest in obligations among else, which are loans to larger companies and countries
1
Less dead time sitting in cars driving, more time fishing and giving the country export income. The big picture.
1
No. But for a growing population, as Faroe Island, it's fine. 30K in 1950, 53K 2022, 68K 2100
