The change happened over some decades. Rich mining towns got brick buildings before poor farm towns. Most of the main street of some mining towns could be brick buildings, while in a farm town maybe just the bank was from bricks, and the rest of wood until the 1920-30's. They often had problems with fires in the towns, and the richer towns would change the buildings of main street to more expencive brick buildings earlier than other places. Quite many brick buildings in bigger mining towns in the west in the 1890's. Between Chicago and San Fransisco, there were not skyscarpers before modern times, more like 3-4-5-6 stories.
