You are not able to think rational here; a US citizen arrested in NK would be a important negotiation card too them, a way to get something. the NK's were not so stupid that they would just kill such a possible high value negotiation card. He was arrested, as foreginers have been before. Got ill. Not given correct treatment in time. Bad luck. People dies all the time on vacation, for a lot of different reasons. Sadly. One never knows what tomorrow brings. But please, you go tell the NK's what is right and wrong, what they have to do. Good luck.

@heatherann5085 A arrested US citizen, a potential HIGHLY important negotiation card. They held on and held on, hoping he could get healthy enough to be kept in jail until he could be used. They did in the end see that he didn't got better, just worse and worse, and needed to let him go while still alive. Sad story. Bad luck. Think of the thousands of US citizen that dies when on travel for different reasons. We never hear a word about 99% of them.

It's a sad situation of course, to have lost a child, in any situation. It's also kind of 'sad' and strange all this hipe around 1 US kid dying after been in arrest in NK. Get's like x10 more attention than the ten's of thousands US kids dying in accidents, from drugs, suicide and so on every year, combined.

Your're possible on to something here. I also think he had a mental breakdown, and might be as you say, trying to take his own life. A foreginer, especially a US citizen, would be considered a potential highly valuable negotiation card too the NK's. Such prisoners they naturally would not just hide away in some work camp for 15 years, but keep them alive and healthy enough to be used when needed in a trade deal. This time they didn't managed to keep the prisoner healthy and in the end concluded he got worse and worse and it would be better too them to get him away while still alive.

It was a no big deal offence, but it gave them the chance to detain a US citizen, a possible VERY valuable negotiation card at the time. Of course they were not to hide him a away in a camp for 15 years. they wanted to trade him for something in return, after a while. but he got medical issues and he could not be used as they hoped.

@community1949 They got the chance to arrest a US citizen, and took it. A potential important negotiation card, as mentioned. Naturally, when kept healthy and in ok condition. that means not put in any work camp, but more like a 'hotel'. I think what really happened is that Otto got a mental break down, told to put in a working camp for 15 years, attempted to take his own life. But it went wrong and he ended up a 'vegetable' after lack of oxygen for longer periode. The North Koreans tried to have him 'come back' with some substances and treatments, but did realise there was nothing they could do, no more any value as a negation card, better to let go and get him out alive. Even if he got out earlier, it wouldn't brought him back.

I guess Kim and his leadership-elite's biggest worry is to loose their power. They know as they gradually open up more and more the risk get higher and higher for some foregin backed coup. I think they are really terrified about it. At the other hand they know they have to let go a little, to have some sanctions lifted, to move some steps toward the West. Kim wants a 'soft landing', going from the leader that was ready for war against the West in order to protect his people, to being the leader that made the country and it's people better off economically. Likely Kim will be the 'last of the Kims'. Sooner or later there will a kind of revolution in the country. Maybe not so violent as one see in the arabic countries, but more of a 'quiet revolution' where some people highly loyal to Kim will act like official leaders and maybe move towards some similar leadership as China. One is still communist, but change name to socialist or something, and open up for foregin Investments.

I think he had som potential health issues in the first place, and reacted to something that others would not. He was given some substances, same as many arrested, to calm him down and/or better manipulate him in a fake trail. To later be used as a negotiation card towards the US.

NK is so crazy different than most any country of the world, it's possible very difficult too many to actually realize it. 'Hey, things don't look so different here, buildings, roads, people, I'm sure it's not so different from..China?'

It's no big deal going to NK. Many does it, and have no problems at all. Just follow the rules, and quite likely nothing goes wrong. People want to see something different, they are curious, want to see it before the country gets 'westernized' at some possible time in the future.
