As long as the oil meets the Toyota specs, its okay. Mobile 1, Penzoil, Valvoline full syntetic are high end brands,

Complicated yes, but keep in mind after after 100+ years of development, the IC engines of today generally are quite dependable, give one are good with the maintenance. Many pplaes around the world it's corrotion and general wear and tear that kills the cars, before engine and drivetrain gives up.

I would say if one got long experiene with cars and oils, and feel 10K miles oil changes has worked fine through all years, one can go ahead. Most car owners will be better off change every 5K miles, including synthetic oils. One do not need to buy the more expencive brands
1
Will be the same rule for any petrol/diesel car. A realtively 'cheap insurance' to change oil often as 5K miles. One do not have to go with the most expencive brands when changing that often, but a full synthetic oil that meets the min specs of the car manufaturer

The mechanic states 4 sets of tires where used for 305K miles. That's about 75K it's set of tires...I get about 20-25K miles, max, out of a set of tires, gentle driving. Can someone explain?
1
67K miles are in general like 'hardly used' with these cars) With a good service history along, I wouldn't be to worried. I got no special knowledge of 2003 models. Possible others have

Brand is not so critical as long as the oil meet the specs and one replace it often, like every 5K miles. Same with transmisson oil, change it more often than adviced from the manufacturer of the car. Full syntetic Mobile 1, Penzoil, Valvoline are top brands
1
Independant mechanics often do better, gives better options and prices, while the dealership is forced to follow some principles, often making things more expencive. One got the choice.
1
I hear several comment about using the Valvoline Restore and protect. Would possible try that one for some time and take notice of any improvements. If not there are oil cleaning addiatives that can be used, but can be hard on gaskets and such if overdone, used too long
1
Still, experience says one are much better of with 5K intervals than 10K when it come to Toyota, and sure others. Feel free to do any conclusion leading you to go for 10K miles+ intervals

The dealer/manufactuers are worried they will sell less cars if they give shorter service intervals than the competition. If one buy the car new, or quite new, replace it after 5 years or so, no big issues with the recommended intervals. It will be second hand owners down the line what will get the issues
1
Yes, 5K intervals helped this engine make it to 305K, even it had pistons with defaults from the factory

There are relative cheap tools aviable for getting off cartidge filers, giving one more leverage than griping directly at the filter with the hands. Maybe you are aware. Also easier to get the filer off when the engine and filter are hot, and the oil will also drain easier
1
It's a good habit to prefil oil and fuel filters. You will find info google
1
The channel gets hundreds of comments and questions a day, he got no chance or time looking through. Google is our friend)
1
If the car got a relative high milage, one can maybe assume 'previous owners did something right')
1
Have you tried when the engine, and filer, is warm? Generally easier to get off when the engine has just been run and is at it's normal operation temperature. Metal expands a bit with higher temperature

He is in the Chicago area

Yes, manufacturers will compete about longer intervals, and Meredes I belive has/had some automatic transmission where oil would last 'for ever'. The smarter thing to do is just to forget about the intervals given by the manufaturers, just change oils more often, at least once a year for the engine. Hey, if one buy the car new and replace it with a new every 5 years or so as many do, it will be some second hand owners that will get the issues
1
with many lower cost models 10K is an issue. Pre year 2000, larger tolerance in general with many engines, not so critical with longer oil intervals
1
wow, impressive) I'm just looking at buying a cheap Toytoa Corolla 2004 model with the smaller 1.6 liter engine over in Europe, that has 185K miles on it. I feel it's pretty high milage compared to other models of the same car and age for sale, and thinking to myself 'would it last a couple of more years and 10-15K miles without any larger engine issues?' I guess there is a chance, it's peanuts compared to 600K miles
1
Many engines deals with once a year oil changes with no issue. Other engines will be better off with more often
1
Full synthetic will be a added bonus, especially if one live in a place with cold winters and/or do much city/que driving. Number 1 is do the change every 5K miles, no matter oil as long as it meets the min specs. I use some lower cost full synthetic, helps keep the engine even cleaner inside, and helps towards a bit less wear and less fuel use starting and driving off in the cold winter months
1
Still lot's of repair going on, but it is harder with newer cars, often it is cheaper than try repair and old part
1
sounds strange that modifing the filter housing is supposed to be needed in order to go for a full synthetic oil? Never heard of it before. Oil is oil, synthetic is mainly longer lasting, higher quality, but otherwise same as 'ordinary oil'. And 2018, most brands use synthetic oil in the first place. Hey, I'm not a Toyota expert. Would check with different sources.
1
Hard to prove 100% naturally, but this mechanic have worked with these engines for a couple of decades and seen a lot..he can indicate these things with a quite high accuracy..There is always a potential chance the engine could been damaged with 5K intervals to, but the chance of it not happening would been much bigger with the 5K
1
wow, that's pretty much oil use. Valvoline Restore & Protect oil is mentioned as an option to try clean out old stuck oil in the engine freeing up the piston rings, make them let less oil slip away. It it has come too far and there is mechanical wear inside the cylinders, one can't do anything to fix it
