Surpriced to hear. Mechanical and steel products from Finland are quite soild and well built as I have experienced, would think they made their homes pretty well too

Each country use mostly the building materials that are the easiest aviable and cheaper. For USA, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland, that is wooden framed houses. In many other countries bricks and similar is the cheaper option. Sure, building homes in the US is expencive, and brick houses there are even more expencive, as it is more labor intensive. Timber frame homes can be built fast, often more or less pre-fabricated in factories

yes, you are likely on point. The problem is not use of wood material, but the codes

When there's noises when you move through the house, the floors are not built in a good way. The builder, and/or your friend possible wanted to save money, not using enough nails, glue, good floor material and so on)

@GeorgeS-z8x The American way of building wooden houses is okay. But there can be great variation in result depending on quality of materials chosen, and quailty/experience of craftsmen used.I guess same situation with all kinds of housing

The large majority of scandinavian houses will have a concrete fundation and timber framed walls/roof. There can be a steel beam used in the floor or ceiling to avoid a support pilar in a room, but will not say steel beams, or bricks, are any important part of the structure of ordinary scandinavian homes. Bricks are moreused for it's looks,to get a contrast. In more expencive homes, archtechtural special desig, steel andbricks can be used as important structural materials.
