  2. because they need to find reasons to still exist after the cold war was over 30 years ago. And the weapons industry is very big in countires like the US, millions of jobs and Trillions of USD! Som conflicts are needed all the time to keep things rolling. Putin is all about to serve and protect Russia. The US and the west have tried for decades to get a change of regime in Russia, to install some puppet leadership there. This is among the major problems bothering Russia, interference in their internal affairs. If just the US and Nato could back off a bit, leave Russia alone, the big tensions would not been so big. But again, less weapons and millitary = less money
