What is wished from the EU and Nato's side is first of all a stable and friendly Russia, which is hard as long as 1 man leads Russia in dictatorship style, sitting with nuclear weapons and shows himself as a 'loose canon' by invading his neighbour looking for 'nazies'. Of course EU countries and NATO is free to guard all of it's border, as any country/region in the world. It's called 'defence', they are not going to invade Russia. No-one has invaded Russian in 80 years, even when Russia was pretty weak after ww2. NATO don't have to do much, mostly just wit and watch. Russia and it's leadership will slowly break down themselves, and their desperate attac of their neighbour is a part of the process. The russian leadership was getting nervous about their position, and felt it's was time to do something with their army
