  3. This iron ore train are a quite well known adventure, to people around the world into such things. The Russian and his companion were there for the same reason as Bald & co. Funny he did think of bringing a Santa's dress)

  10. Naturally if one are at the wrong spot at the wrong time, bad things can happen, like getting lost in a Chicago (3000 killings a year) back street in the wrong side of town. But Mauritania is not a typical destination for tourists at all, it is more dangerous than many countries, it's just for the more extreme adventurers who are used to visit more dangerous places than average. I would not go there. Not of my interest)

Yeez...When there are strict rules for filming around in Belarus 'on paper', and other ex-soviet countries, they are obviously not cared to be followed up by the local officials, as with many 'strict rules on the paper'. I think they likely just care if someone are caught filming around military stuff, getting into political stuff. Honestly, there are possible a lot of foreigners in the capital, including journalists, that have filmed riots without anyone care. Nowadays there are many foreign tourists roaming around in the ex soviet countries, with cameras naturally, it has changed a lot since the 'fall of the wall'. As long one are not looked at as a direct threat to the political regimes, just filming locals, trees, roads, the sky, cats, fields, one can almost do 'whatever', part from obvious 'normal' crimes as robbery and so on. The country are happy to get some income from tourists. Mr Bald's channel is a travel channel, showing people, culture and places, he wisely stays off topics like politics and religion. If one are interested in the politic situation of the countries Mr Bald is visiting, as many of us also are, one are seeking other sources.

He still has a apartment in England, or at least had last year. Many people might use ad-block on YT, but yeah in total he will at least get 10K, maybe closer to 30-40K a year

  18.  @lukasraw  I think it's a big advantage to have good travel experience, backpacker experience, when visiting places like this, hopefully being 2 persons or more traveling together. I 'luckily' don't feel any big need for adventures like this myself, it's enough looking at youtube) I like travel within Europe mostly, like go with a bicyle in the German countryside, no high risk locations)

I believe it was the French involved here. The French are gone long time ago, they likely made some messing around while there, but all in all things would had been worse as of today. A pretty corrupt country, as usual around there. It's deeply grown into the culture, from long before Europeans went there. Always harsh conditions, to many people it's a about grabbing as much as you can. Your neighbor dead, more bread for you.

  27. Islam came to the region of Mauritania some 1200 years ago, and is still the official religion. There is a strong culture of the nomads/Berbers in the country, that has been around for centuries. They can communicate in the international languages as Arabic and French, and they have their local languages.

  29. It's great to have some nice locals showing you around when visiting a city, and she was fine companion too Mr Bald. She is more of a materialistic big city woman, not Mr Bald's type to hang around with in the long run, without similar interest for the kind of travels he is into. Alina on the other hand is more of Mr Balds adventures type. But they are just friends traveling together and meeting now and then, stated by mr Bald last october. Which is just fine.

  36. It's a state of the art iron ore train, hauling what is about 50% of the country's export income. Will not find any better iron ore trains in old soviet. They could chosen to buy a ticket for the couple of passenger wagons hooked on the back of the iron ore train, but that would cost money and likely not be as cool;)

  38.  @djpsypher916  They sure are. I'm a fan of these and got one myself as a second car here in Scandinavia. I enjoy the style and simplicity of them compared to newer Mercedes. There are fewer and fewer garages that knows much about these older cars these days apart from changing the brakes and stuff like that. It can be quite expensive if some mechanic not into them need to use hours of 'trail and error' considering the electric system , not being able to hook up a PC as they are used to) so it's an advantage to have interest and time for doing most of the maintenance oneself, or know someone who are especially into the older models.

Travel to the UN and complain. I won't mind using 'Saharan Africa', but would stick to the official expression like Mr Bald do here, UNTIL the world, the UN come up with something else.

  43. Yes, they were pretty 'over-engineered'. From about 1995 the engineers were not allowed to build the e-class like this anymore, they lasted too long, expensive to build, so the economists said 'stop. give us cheaper models' .

  44.  @brakaner2703  some people don't mind seeking what is considered miserable travels and places to most tourists, it makes them feel excitement, feel alive, even if parts of the travel will include some pain for a while they feel it's worth it in the end to have gotten the experience.

  57. Ill-mannered staring from a young guy. She must be a quite exotic sight around there. It's generally advised to travel in a group in 'off the tracks' places like this. Majority of men are not criminals, even if staring, but naturally one can have bad luck bumping into that '1 of a 100'
