If you have ancestors who've lived in Alabama since 1850 and you were raised in California, you're not a Southerner. Furthermore, not all southern states fought for the Rebels. If a referendum passes in Scotland and Ireland, they can leave the UK. In the US, it won't matter. Secession is illegal.
