@jamesmccann355 Smith was racist. He repeatedly voiced support for racial segregation and white minority rule. He infamously stated the white man was master of Rhodesia and intended to keep it. And with or without settlers there would have been a population explosion in Southern Rhodesia. The natives owed the settlers nothing.

@adrianshephard378 those people fought for pay. In addition they were only a tiny portion of the black population. The Rhodesians would always struggle to find soldiers throughout the war. The ratio of blacks to whites was so high because there were so few whites in the country.

Also he advocated permanent segregation and opposed majority rule, envisioning a system that would have 50/66 seats reserved for whites, then some time in the future have 50/100 seats reserved for whites. All of this despite the black majority.
