Feral and domestic cats that are allowed to roam free are a scourge on native wildlife. It's just that simple. They're indiscriminate killers of hundreds if not thousands of species insects, birds and animals.
Which can and does have great negative impacts on native ecosystems, far beyond what they kill. It disrupts food chain, seed distribution etc.
Neutering a male has little effect because a female will just seek out a breeding male when in heat as well as draw them in.
As stated, they are still destroying wildlife as well.
Spaying and neutering may have a place in certain areas (urban, etc).
But is not really effective, both in cost and destruction prevention in rural areas. Aggressive removal has to be part of the equation.
As well as education of the public, on how much damage feral cats as well as Fluffy does when out for her/his nightly prowl. Or abandoned.
Introduction of non-native species has almost always ended up with devastating effects or extinction of native flora/fauna. Especially when it comes to top predators, high birthrate animals or highly aggressive plants. Many native species come under attack at the same time with little time to adjust.
U.S. alone, snakes, bees, nutria, ants, fish are just some of the man made disasters.
Respect for life is one thing irresponsible ownership and reluctance to address the problem is another.
