@justseffstuff3308 It is true that temporary contracts exist in many industries, not only in research. However, two aspects of this phenomenon occur in research to a considerably greater extent than in most other fields. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong: 1) When your contract expires a researcher, it is not enough to look for a new employer or even to relocate to a different city: most of the times you need to relocate in a different country. This is actually good once or twice, but after four or five times this may legitimately be described as an exaggeration or a distorsion. I believe this does not happen so frequently in most other "industries", but again correct me if I am wrong. 2) In most other "industries", permanent jobs can also be found for intermediate roles, not exclusively at the top level. This is different from academia, where (with some exceptions) there is usually no permanent research job at a level lower than a professor.
