That hypothetical scenario would only make sense if your individual finance worked anything like a global economy. I've got a scenario that might help: Prior to the housing market collapse of '08, buying a home was the best investment you could make. You went into debt, yes, but you built equity, improved your credit score and had something tangible that you could sell and make a profit off of. The economy relies on a free-flow of money in all sorts of things. America's deficit shouldn't be so high that it's crippling but operating a country with massive economy without debt isn't feasible or encouraged. I know it's confusing but I hope that helps.
