There was an anthropologist who developed the theory (that was laughed at by colleagues) that early humans hunted larger prey rarely, due to disadvantages and high death count and instead hunted smaller prey (rabbits, sloths, squirrels, mice etc) and gathered fruits and vegetables as a group. This allowed groups to grow. Only the development of weaponry, both low and high tech, conferred greater advantages. If you could kill a giant elk or moose or mammoth from a distance, one could survive a hunt. Could women have joined a hunt or hunted alone? Possibly. But as long as women were seen as the CREATORS of children (without advanced knowledge of our reproductive systems) they would have been seen as needing protection at all times. Unless ancient humans KNEW that the act of coitus created new people.
