I was asked to proof read the manuscript of a colleagues second novel and as I went through it I told him (but did not physically mark the manuscript) that certain words and passages were going to be a no go for him publishing it as straight literature and that he should try the fantasy publishers instead. They weren't interested solely because of the words I had mentioned and specific passages. So, if one sets a novel in the deep south of the U.S., uses certain words and is caucasian, they won't publish. This is how the species dies. By shutting off its oxygen.
