  1. Attitude and arrogance will get you dead or badly injured. One night during a street celebration a security guard didn't show up at our building. One of my fellow tenants, a teacher(go figure) decided to take over as a guard. I told them emphatically they did not have the proper attitude or temperament for security(I had worked security previously). I told them to go to bed. The next day I got up for a fishing trip and discovered a large pool of blood in our parking lot. Upon returning home I discovered that my fellow tenant was severely beaten after taking umbrage with the attitude of a visitor to the neighbourhood during the festival. After hearing the full details, they were, in my mind: asking for it. They escalated almost IMMEDIATELY and actually got into a spitting assault with a 20 something inebriated woman. They then opened her forehead with a flashlight. Next thing they know my fellow tenant has the visitor's boyfriend and 2 or 3 others on top of them. Broken jaw, concussion, smashed orbit...bruised from mid chest up. This person now carries a knife with them. Bad bad bad idea. Arrogance: as a teacher this tenant actually believed ANGER and AGE would be an asset. If 12 year olds listened to them, then inebriated adults would as well. Besides, what did I know as a lowly college graduate who only has a background in teaching...martial arts. The first words out of their mouth to me(through wired teeth) was: I should have listened to you.
