  1. I would argue, quite persuasively, that "grunge" was never a genre or a movement. It was completely commercial. The term "alternative rock" is bullshit and was created solely by producers in the big companies. Even the fashion the "grunge" artists adopted was warmed over punk mixed with 60's folk revivalism. As you stated: Torn t-shirts : punk Combat boots: punk Work shirts or plaid: folk Dyed hair: punk Shaved heads: punk Day-Glo colours: punk/60's Mod Dark lyrics have been used since the 50's as have down tuned guitars. My opinion is that the death of genre occurred DUE to "grunge", not that I didn't find the artists enthusiasm inviting. After an ALTERNATIVE, where else could you turn? Programming. Programmed voices. Programmed songs. Programmed artists. Programmed instrumentation. And it is garbage. That's this era: Garbage. Not garage. Garbage.
