Back in the day, whilst writing Eleanor Rigby, not only did Ringo contribute to the song but so did Mal Evans. Beatles boyhood friend Pete Shotton also contributed, along with George and John (although, according to Shotton, Lennon's contribution was minimal).
None of the other contributors were credited.
Current research shows that although Paul was responsible for 95% of the song's lyrical content, others, like Mal and Ringo and the rest, contributed to the finished song.
This may be a case of neighbouring rights, something American musicians don't have regarding the Coldplay ditty.
As I'm sure Rick knows, practically every other country on Earth shares royalties with not only the songwriters, but the musicians on any session as well. These are known as neighbouring rights.
The people listed probably requested credit for any contribution and received it, even for a chord change or hook.
Hence the 15 credited "writers".
