  1. The vast vast vast majority of directors are HACKS and this has been true for well over a century. For every artist (there's been about 2 dozen over 100 years) you get hacks. They win Academy Awards, they get paid handsomely, they settle in...and they have no more connection to an Ozu or a Hawks or a Coppola or a Kurosawa than they do to an amoeba. Phillips is a hack, as are most modern Hollywood directors. 1% artist 5% workman/carpenters 94% hacks
