It may seem utilitarian to flick the track switch, but allowing the 5 to die and saving the 1 is actually more utilitarian in that there are now 5 less people to tend to, 5 less people who could possibly add more people to the planet, 5 less polluting people, 5 people that leave more food for the remaining population, etc. 5 less psychopaths perhaps?
In one view, letting 5 die is the optimal choice.
Look at it this way. We create vaccines. Vaccines don't exist in nature, but natural immunity does.
Why would one set out to provide a curative for a part of nature? Why would one create something that allows the number of a societal population to keep growing, polluting, creating conflict, outstriping resources, etc. It's like the rat experiments, only replace rats with humans.
It may seem utilitarian, but it really isn't. It's actually completely destructive.
