As a kid I always wished I could have worked for the Bell System. Those dreams were dashed in 1984 and this long gone 15 year old kid missed The opportunity.

What a film. Watching how they mobilized all the different entities of The Bell System, pulling it all together And getting the job done. Good luck today.

I remember the snap on caps for the RJ11s. Early touchtone WEs were polarity sensitive though. If you messed up tip and ring you couldn't break dialtone.
8
Had a chuckle watching the techs using their scissors to either check for tone or send a short..
7
I was 16 when they broke up Bell back on Jan 1 1984.. it was an obsession, hobby and I wished to get into the business. It never happened for me but the interest And memories are still with me almost 39 years later.
7
The Great Bell System! Almost 37 years now since the Divestiture of Ma Bell. The kids today dont have a clue about the Bell System. Gone are the days of the "telephone man" installing that Rotary Ivory 554 wall Set in the kitchen. "Hey can I get the Longer cord"?

660-7 came in handy around banks of payphones. As kids my friends and I would dial the number at the payphones It would shut the dial tone off for 5 minutes. Anyone walking up to use the phone would lose their deposit until The dial tone came back. We always had Quarters for video games. This was the early 80s👍

My goal as a kid was to work for The Bell System, unfortunately that ended back in 1984 and that 16 Year old kid is long grown up now and looking forward to retirement from a different line of work...

I remember the Bell System presentation in my school. They had a device which I remembered years later called the "Tele-trainer".
5
We had rotary service for years then when I was a teen I brought home a used WE 2554 set and hooked it up. The touchtone worked, the phone company eventually caught on and threatened to charge us extra for touchtone. My dad blew his lid and made me disconnect it.
5
I still ask that same question 36 years later..
5
"Back in the 90s"...LOL
5
I believe that set was eventually the WE 1500 set. No star or pound symbol. Kinda looks like the government AutoVon sets..

Imagine making this same film today. No help showing up for work. Rainbow hair colored clowns running around in circles. Non violent "protests". RIP to our Greatest Generation I am so sorry this Country has turned Out the way it did.
4
In NYC we had 660.. 660-7 used to shut the line off. 660-6 used to send ring generator back after you hang up. One time when I was playing around with different digits, I guess somebody from the C.O. answered me and threatened to shut off the service.
4
The Bell System was great at Public relations. From National Geographic magazine ads to films like these they literally knew how to push buttons..

@rapman5363 Priceless reply!
3
I would have lived at the Bell System exhibition.
3
I was a stickler for listening to ringers on TV shows and movies. Many times the sounds didnt match the sets the characters were answering. Today it doesn't matter, Everyone is on a cell or texting back.
3
Just everyday working folks making a good living. Ma Bell benefits and a pension to boot. Unfortunately just before AT&T discovered that vast untapped labor resource out far east who would work for next to nothing.
3
Fast forward to 2021...
2
@UrielX1212 Absolutely not!
2
Wow I just had to research that. I forgot the call forward code having Verizon Fios..
2
Hello Operator, " Give me 555-2368..."
2
I think the guy that said "he works his pants to the bone" is actor Frank Marth. He was an actor that appeared occasionally on the Honeymooners.
2
Grew up in predivesture days myself. Had NY Telephone here in the Big Apple.
2
@sluckabaugh WE 302 Model?
2
Grew up in the waning days of the Bell System, I used to open up the telephone sets at home to explore- sometimes breaking something in the process. Then I would watch the repairman fix or Replace the sets. I have had a lifetime Interest ever since.
2
Yeah when Ralph Kramden got his Phone, Ed Norton ran down to congratulate him...
2
Brains00007 I will admit it's been a good 35 years since the early 80s for me but after a google search of coin telephone costs it appears the Bell System was granted a rate increase in 1984 for certain major cities up to .25 cents. We had New York Telephone As our carrier back in the day so I guess my comment should have Read this was the "mid 80s" instead.👍
2
The scam was you bought the outer Shell of the phone not the guts. The guts were the property of MA BELL! Bell System Property Not For Sale
2
" Bell Bottoms".. how ironic.
2
Yes many modern telephone systems are able to page through Public address speakers. You pick up The receiver dial a code or pre programmed button and make the announcement. These features were Prevalent in Key Telephone Systems Installed on site.
2
@h0tel1 "Carter Phone" really paved the way for "Crap phones"
2
The scam back then was you thought you bought the phone but your local bell company said you owned the shell (outer case) not the guts. "Bell System Property Not for Sale"
2
And the current generation has no drive at all..
2
These pre divestiture movies... if they only knew what was going to happen on Jan 1st 1984..
2
@junkdeal Have you visited the site called "Phone Trips" ? It features a vast collection of long gone Telecom Central office equipment sounds and Other recordings.
2
I recently had a sewer back up and lost a large amount of Bell System memorabilia including some color rotary sets. I was devastated.
2
Captain Crunch anyone?
1
And they are still trying today..
1
How about " Battery and Ground "
1
Most likely if its copper. They want to migrate you to FIOS Fiber..
1
@AAA-uy2ob yes this was at least 40 years ago. I hadn't completely delved into the intricacies of telecom.
1
Captain Crunch whistle. Made the 2600HZ tone.

@keeptyrannyfromamerica8519 Collected WE phones as a kid. Have a few WE 102, 202, 5302, 500s, Trimline, Princess, even managed to get a few coin sets over the years. Have countless Signs and other memorabilia and my favorite was the Bell System ads from old National Geographic magazines. WE truly was the best.
1
Prior to 1984 you weren't supposed to connect a Non- Bell System telephone to their network. After Divestiture, Bell had to allow other Subscriber equipment to be connected. Western Electric phones Were one of the best and literally did Last a lifetime.
1
Unlike today's zombies.
1
@BfloNate I'm pushing 60 kid..😄
1
The best part was when they abandoned repairing their copper plant. The FIOS rollout was already Underway when my 6 pair UG cable had failed. " sorry no more pairs"- you'll have to get FIOS..
