  1. This is a good deal for me while the taxpayers of Alabama (which would also include me) get screwed. I happen to live in a town only a mile from the Georgia state line. Georgia allows any licensed retail establishment to sell liquor. As you might imagine, the guys in Georgia can sell booze a lot cheaper than going to a state store here. Consequently, everyone flocks across the state line while the local ABC store employees sit and twiddle their thumbs. As a result, Alabama sustains higher costs to run the ABC, so they have to raise prices. Then even more people flock across the state line. It is technically illegal for someone for Alabama to do this, but illegal in the same way we all report the lost sales tax when we buy online. It's a stupid situation, but one that's propped up the churches and their undue influence on what state government does.

  2. Sara, I quit smoking almost exactly two years ago. I have used vaping as my substitute and it has worked. I'm down to 6 mg nicotine juice after starting with (whew!) 48 mg. The most important thing is get good vaping hardware and test enough vape juices to find ones that work for you and don't make you short of breath. Get your vape kit from a vape store with staff that understands vaping and can help you with recommendations. Don't get your first kit online and try to save money. It's going to cost you about $200 up front for good hardware and about $50 to get enough juice to test. Some juice has chemicals that do affect my lungs. They might be fine for you. I'm older than most on here and my COPD is more advanced so I have to be more careful. If you're still young and haven't been diagnosed with COPD, vaping is the way to go if you can't quit altogether. The other thing about vaping is it gives you something to do with your hands that mimics cigarette smoking. That's an important psychological thing for many smokers.

  3. Jeff, oxy is a semisynthetic while morphine is not synthetic. Regardless, both have their main source as the Persian opium poppy. I am presently on MSContin 30 mg. It is the extended release version of morphine. I have also been on oxycodone 30 mg. My experience was the pain relief wasn't much different but the oxy was hugely more expensive than the morphine, like $500 a month compared to $50. Most insurance won't cover it because MSContin is the preferred generic. I would have paid the price if it had some amazing pain relieving qualities but, for me, it didn't.

  4. Not only doesn't Cleveland have many business advantages, it also has about the worst climate in the lower 48. Spring, while, it can be beautiful, lasts about 2 weeks before a late frost kills the blossoms or the heat and humidity of summer sets in. Summer lasts for about 2-6 months, depending on the year. It can be incredibly hot and humid for months or rarely make it above 70. No matter what, it will rain when you are supposed to go on a picnic. We had some beautiful falls but, most of the time, it lasts three weeks before the leaves turn brown, fall off, and that's it. Then we have winter. It usually starts around Halloween and  goes on until Easter. We went weeks without ever seeing the sun. There's just enough snow to make things miserable but not enough to make it fun. The weather is not only cold but it's a damp cold when it's above zero which, for some winters, isn't much of the time. If you're suicidal, don't come to Cleveland in the winter.

  6. I just looked it up for Texas. There's one in Houston, Austin, and Dallas. I assume that's enough the catch all the likely Tesla buyers in Texas. God forbid you live in someplace like El Paso. Albuquerque, Salt Lake City, Columbus OH, or Minneapolis MN. These are all cities with a comparable metro population to Austin that do not have a Tesla service center. I know the concept of flyover states is sometimes said jokingly, but Elon Musk really believes it. If you live anywhere between Indianapolis and San Francisco, you can forget about getting warranty service without a long. long drive. I used to own stock in Tesla, and one of the reasons why I sold it is their stark number and distribution of service centers. I don't think Tesla has a snowball's chance in hell of meeting its sales goal without opening more service centers.

  8. First, they needed 10,000 mask and then, just a day later, the same hospital needed 100,000 masks. This is a great example of hysteria in action. We are going to end this worldwide panic with a ten times lifetime supply after all the production is done, with the path to the finish littered with bankrupt companies and broke entrepreneurs. This kind of production only works when you have a willing wholesale supplier (the government), a customer with an unlimited appetite for product because it's either at cost or free, (The Healthcare Industry), and unlimited pool of investors (the terrified taxpayer) to fund the products. Have any one of those three legs fold up and the whole thing grinds to a halt.

  9. There will never be a second lockdown . People simply won't put up with it. We will have to expect that more people will get sick and more people will die once the restrictions are lifted. The lockdown was never to stop everyone from dying. It was to flatten the rate of infection so hospitals could handle the influx. We will never get herd immunity until we have a sufficient number who get the virus and recover. We can never get back to where we were if we remain totally risk adverse. And before I'm accused of wanting to kill grandpa, I AM GRANDPA ! I'm 74 with COPD. If I get sick and die, I probably would have died within several years away. I don't want to survive only to lose the country I knew five minutes ago.

There's pretty good evidence that you're not going to get promoted or promoted more slowly if you're not working face to face with your boss. The same is true if you don't see your coworkers at least 50% of the time. You guys that aren't unicorns will give less than glowing reports about that colleague, either through jealousy or just because they don't know you very well. You actually pay a pretty heavy price for more the 50% of your time not being in the office. Work is still a social as well as professional activity, and taking part in the social part is pretty hard when you live thousands of miles away. Remote commuting is a lot trickier than it first appears. If you want to get promoted and make more money, you're taking a wiser path than your unicorn mate

  16.  @Cacowninja  That's a nice libertarian position and all, but there are some drugs, like flakka and spice where the proportion of users become so violent is so high that trying to remove the drug from users before they get it has clear public safety implications. There are a few other drugs in the same class that still need to be outlawed because they are just too dangerous to the public and police. If you'd ever been in a 20 minute fight with someone ripped on flakka you might have a better understanding of what I'm talking about. I'm uncomfortable with heroin being sold at the corner store because I've seen what a life destroying drug it is. I've seen 20 year olds that have a life ahead of them dead by the time they reach 40 after spending their second 20 years only looking for their next fix. This has nothing to do with it being legal or illegal, it's the nature of the drug. I'd point out the authors of the first article are both economists. The author of the second article is a law professor who is an activist against bail and so-called mass incarceration. None of them have any experience in street level policing. I presume you don't either. It would be a good idea to get the views and experience of those of us who do before you decide to start advocating for changes in laws.

They see it as our last chance to get the party hacks out of Washington and send in a guy who'll break up the furniture. It's the same reason that Bernie has been giving Hillary an assraping. No one outside DC and NYC wanted to see another Bush or Rubio. They've all been tried before. Trump will go to Washington beholden to almost no one. He's also not going to be cosying up to all you millennial bloggers either. There will be a new sheriff in town, and I can see you guys profusely sweating all the way from my house.

  18. I couldn't agree more. My late wife and I had to battle for over a year for her to try an experimental drug that might have worked on acute myelogenous leukemia. She, along with other AML patients finally got that right. As it turned out, the drug didn't work, but enough terminal AML patients tried the drug to prove it didn't work and get it removed from any further trials. That can be just as valuable as finding out an experimental drug actually does work.

  25. Jeff, one of my best friends has had Crohns since he was in his late 20's. It's a terrible disease. I guess if there's an upside for you it's that you don't have to worry about the constipation that plagues so many on narcotics. He ended up with a colostomy and, from his experience, I'd urge you not to have it done unless there's no other way to bring what's left of your bowels under control. It has been a continuing nightmare for him. Didn't fix the problem, and he's had several near fatal infections.

As the economy improved (or at least did until the shit hit the fan with the virus), there were lots of investors buying up abandoned houses and fixing them up as rentals. They need guys with tools to help do the work and house sit while it's going on so all the new appliances don't walk out the back door. Seriously, check that out. You can make some good money in Detroit.

Unfortunately, what I fear is going to turn into another wave of defaults and foreclosures as a result of our shooting ourselves in the head may be an opportunity for you, since I think California will be the hardest hit. Start talking to banks, real estate companies, and mortgage lenders now.

For one month, police departments cease patrolling all areas of a "diverse" county. All the cops just stay in the station, playing pinochle and checking out the latest at PornHub. At the end of that month, do you think there would be any difference between the hood and white suburbs in terms of crime related stats like shootings, murders, assaults, arson, burglaries...that kind of thing? Be honest now. If there would, why do you attribute the differences, which already exist on a day to day basis, as being the fault of the police instead of the culture of people who live in those areas?

My point in my original post was going after assault rifles is illogical when there are other long guns that are, or can be, just as deadly. I wasn't writing my post in response to some leftist, it was on a post about why assault rifles get banned because they look scary on a channel that not many leftists care to read. The comparison between the friendly looking Ranch Rifle in the video and the scary looking AR-15 is the same as between my friendly looking Ithaca 37 and all your tactical shotguns when the shit hits the fan.

A designated marksman rifle is not the same as a sniper rifle. A designated marksman rifle doesn't have the same specifications for MOA at range as a sniper rifle. You are absolutely wrong about this, and it just diminishes whatever case you're trying to make, although all the CAPITAL letters for things and frothing about treason don't help much either.

  47. I smoked for 50 years but was able to quit four years ago thanks to nicotine pills (which I notice are never mentioned by these busybodies) and vaping. I would probably be dead by now if I continued to smoke cigarettes. Vaping is not safe, and no should start who isn't already a nicotine addict. For those of us who are, it's a potential life saver. And to you young punk vapers trying to outdo each other in a public place to see who can make the biggest and most obnoxious cloud of vapor - grow up and stop it! Do it in your house or some place private. You are giving the pearl clutchers more ammunition.

  48. You realize the majority of people still have to make things with their hands, right? Even for those that are "knowledge workers", have you ever tried to figure out how well your presentation is going over when you get zero body language feedback? I was able to work from my home office as a construction project management consultant for over ten years, but I still had to get out and make sure things were being screwed together in the right places or concrete was being mixed properly. Meet formen and other engineers face to face so I had a better idea of how their personality was influencing the job. Doing things remotely when it consists of things like cranking out project plans and gantt charts works fine, but not being on site for a real overview and understanding of the project progress...well, not so much. I think you're vastly overestimating the place of the cloud in business.
